This is a beautiful wine that marries elegance and power in spectacular fashion. The 2012 Taurasi Riserva Vigna Quintodecimo is a large-scale red wine with full-bodied appeal and very intense aromas of black fruit, spice, dried blackberry and plum. This vintage shows subtle hints of its bottle evolution with layers of campfire ash or smoked bacon. That savory, cured bresaola aroma is delicious now but could become more evident with time. You taste some of the sweetness of the hot vintage with candied fruit that is woven within the considerably thick texture of this wine. Fruit comes from a single-vineyard site planted in 2001 located 420 meters above sea level with limestone-rich clay soils. A mere 2,013 bottles were made.
Luigi Moio makes some of the very best wines you will taste from Campania. This is a benchmark estate for the region and indeed for the country. After gaining his master's and PhD in agricultural science, with prolonged research in Burgundy, Professor Moio established this estate in 2001 in Irpinia. Today, it counts 30 hectares of land, including 22 hectares that are planted to vines. I absolutely recommend these excellent and exciting new releases from Quintodecimo. The estate produces six wines: three reds and three whites. All are truly excellent, as you can gather from my enthusiastic mid-90s scoring across the board.
