Here is another masterpiece from Quintodecimo. The 2012 Taurasi Riserva Vigna Grande Cerzito shows an impenetrable, inky black appearance. The wine offers loads of power—and drama too—with contrasting aromas of sun-dried prune woven tight and intertwined with campfire or barbecue ash, licorice root, toasted spice and tarry road asphalt. This is a full-bodied red wine with strong tannic contours and lavish dark-fruit flavors that wrap thickly over the senses. This Taurusi comes from a vineyard site planted in 2004 on compressed ash and volcanic soils. Only 2,013 bottles were produced.
Luigi Moio makes some of the very best wines you will taste from Campania. This is a benchmark estate for the region and indeed for the country. After gaining his master's and PhD in agricultural science, with prolonged research in Burgundy, Professor Moio established this estate in 2001 in Irpinia. Today, it counts 30 hectares of land, including 22 hectares that are planted to vines. I absolutely recommend these excellent and exciting new releases from Quintodecimo. The estate produces six wines: three reds and three whites. All are truly excellent, as you can gather from my enthusiastic mid-90s scoring across the board.
