Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura 2017
Suggested Retail: $120.00
93 points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 2022
The Castello Banfi 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura brings that primary intensity up a notch, and the wine shows nicely integrated aromas of spice, cedar, tar and tobacco. The emphasis here is on freshness and linearity—Poggio alle Mura is also distinguished by the sharpness of its fruit—but you get more fruit weight here and a longer, more determined level of power on the lengthy close. Again, the alcohol content of the wine is very high (at 15.5%) in this 33,992-bottle release.
Castello Banfi is presenting its second release of its newest family member, the Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Marrucheto (reviewed here). Behind the scenes, this winery, with its very large footprint on the southern side of the Montalcino appellation, has been working hard to implement protocols for sustainable farming and practices. In fact, they are becoming leaders in this camp, and this is something I will look at in greater detail at a future time.
